Toll Workers’ Protest on Agra-Lucknow Expressway, Thousands of Vehicles Cross Free (TIN)
Expressway Bonus Dispute Chaos: On Monday, there was an uproar due to the demonstration of toll workers on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway in Fatehabad, Uttar Pradesh. Employees angry over the Diwali bonus opened all the toll gates, resulting in thousands of vehicles passing through without paying toll. This incident caused huge disruption in toll operations and the traffic system, after which the police had to reach the spot.
21 employees of Fatehabad toll plaza, which is managed by Shree Sign & Dater Company, expressed displeasure over the Diwali bonus. The company gave him a bonus of only Rs 1100, which was much less than his expected amount. The company took over the charge of toll management in March this year, after which a controversy started over the calculation and distribution of bonuses. The angry employees decided to stop their duty, demanding more bonus, and opened all the toll gates, leading to uncontrolled movement of vehicles.
After thousands of vehicles passed without paying the toll fee, the toll management tried to call staff from other toll plazas, but the protesting employees stopped these replacement personnel from working, worsening the situation.
As soon as information about the situation was received, the police force reached the spot and, along with maintaining peace, facilitated talks between the company officials and the striking employees. The toll management assured the employees of better facilities and started discussing their demands. Senior company officials promised a 10 percent salary hike as an immediate solution.
Following this assurance, employees agreed to return to work, and toll operations returned to normal after a two-hour disruption. However, Mr. Sign & Detmer defended the decision of the limited bonus, saying that the contract was taken only in March; hence, the bonus could not be given for the entire year. The incident highlights the challenge of maintaining a balance between the demands of toll workers and company policies. The police have said that they will keep an eye on the situation.
